Enhancing cultural values has been a conduit to boost the self-esteem of Haitian youth caught on the margins between the competing values of two cultures. To address this issue, HCC has conducted and managed youth development programs at four high schools located in the most populous sections of Brooklyn where over 60% of the population are immigrants. For the past several years, HCC has been managing these after school programs with funding from the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). Activities include, music and dance, conflict resolution and communication, language and other pertinent activities that promote ‘being part of’and yet, still have the opportunity to have ‘fun’!
