What is Sexual Assault Awareness Month?
An annual campaign to raise public awareness about sexual assault and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. This campaign also encourages victims to speak up and know there is help.
Here at HCC, we have partnered with Top Community Development Corp and we want to focus on how sexual assault particularly impacts people of color. Did you know for every 15 black women that are raped only 1 reports their assault. We want to help the fight to end the stigma behind sexual assault. It is not shameful, it is time to SPEAK UP. We need to work hard and make it known to survivors that we will listen and help. Prevention is key. We want our community to know we are here to support them.
All over the country, communities, organizations, businesses and crisis centers host events and activities to raise awareness about sexual violence as a public health, human rights and social justice issue. The theme this year is “Building Safe Online Spaces Together” where awareness and prevention of harassment, cyberbullying, sexual abuse and exploitation are the focus.

April 27th will mark the 24th Annual Denim Day - a celebration to raise awareness surrounding sexual assault, get conversations going and educate individuals on how to prevent sexual assault related violence.
In 1999, when an Italian Supreme Court decided to overturn a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans there was international protest and the Denim Day campaign was born.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SHOW SUPPORT
Participating in this day allows for open conversations about sexual assault, encourages victims to speak up and also honors and supports victims of all sexual assault cases. There are many ways you can get involved and join the movement to reduce violence in our community.
